Cotton facts
Although cotton farming only totals 2% of the world's farming acreage, it is sprayed with up to 25% of the world's pesticides and herbicides. Every year, about 3 million people are poisoned around the world and 200,000 die from pesticide use. Chronic long-term effects discovered through new studies link certain pesticides to cancer, lowered fertility, disruption of the endocrine system and to the suppression of immune systems. Communities and consumers are insidiously exposed to pesticides through contamination of the soil, air and water. Bhopal is a scary reminder of a catastrophe caused by pesticides. In addition to ill-health cotton farmers suffer a continued financial struggle against rich farmers in the West.
The other side
Organic cotton, however, reduces pesticide damage to the environment and the farmers and leads to more socially responsible production. The farmers benefit from a stable income, and better health. The end result for you is that you get goods free from harmful and often banned pesticide residues, and other concoctions of heavy metals used in the dying process such as Cadmium and Chrome; better for your health and everyone else involved.
Cool Trendy and Responsible
The best designer labels may not only be charging you for their name, but also for added chemicals, and for environmental and human suffering.
