Male Grooming the Organic Way

Organic Shaving

Amongst our top selling organic shaving products are Eyre Biobotanics Shaving cream, Miessence Shaving Gel and Green Peoples Shave Now Shaving gel.

All our organic shaving products contain totally natural organic ingredients and they all three work similarly in that they lift and soften the hair whilst soothing and protecting the skin. They all do it in a slightly different way.

As a general rule when you begin shaving make sure your beard is completely wet with warm water. The temperature is important as the warmth helps open the pores and soften the hair. Although you think that foams give you more lather which will help in shaving, this is often not the case, instead they leave your skin dry and irritated. Organic shaving oils and creams work the best as they will give you a smoother less drying shave.

We Love Eyre Biobotanics fantastic organic shave cream which blends oils and creams in a two part shave. The Lemon Myrtle organic Shaving Oil penetrates to protect sensitive skin from razor burn whilst the Kunzea organic shaving Cream provides a rich cooling mask, which softens stubble and provides long-lasting surface lubrication. Its is packed with other botanical ingredients such as Squalene from Wheatgerm which is a rich emollient and Triglycerols from Macadamia nut oil which protect from irritation.

We’re also loving Miessence organic shaving gel contains soothing Aloe Vera, Safflower oils and Guar to provide a light yet rich emollient for shaving. It also contains rich yet soothing essential oils for healing, which also impart a gorgeous aroma whilst lifting and softening the hair. Green Peoples mens organic skin care Shave Now organic shaving gel also contains Aloe Vera, along with sunflower, olive oil and Geranoil essential oil. These soothe and condition the skin whilst cypress Thyme and lavender lifts and softens the hairs and grapefruit and clove oils help pores stay clear.

Whichever you choose, massage the organic shaving cream, oil or gel well into the beard. Make sure your Razor is really sharp and shave in the direction of the hair growth. Use short strokes for best results. Make sure to rinse your Razor in Hot water NOT cold (especially if you’re using an oil). Rinse your Razor regularly during shaving.

When you’ve finished with your shave, wash any remaining organic shaving cream, oil or gel off with Cold water. Follow with a toner if possible to remove any impurities and close your pores. This will prevent any nasty spots or blemishes appearing later. Complete with an organic after shave Balm on the shaved areas and an organic moisturiser on the rest of your face and neck to keep your skin feeling supple yet firm. We stock Miessence organic skin care Aftershave balm, which is a firm favourite, paced with Chamomile, Marshmallow extracts and Aloe Vera, it’ll leave your skin cool, refreshed and toned with organic witch hazel and St John Wort.

Earthbound Organics mens skin care, have launched a new Cedar wood after shave cream. This wonderful cream is moisturising due to rich hemp seed oil. Yet the formula is light and non greasy. The hemp oil lends rich omega oils and Vitamin F, whilst Gotu Kola, is rich in Vitamin K which is anti inflammatory and promotes healing. Cedar wood completes this cream with its natural antiseptic qualities and manly aroma.

Use and Aftershave balm rather than Aftershave

An organic skin care aftershave balm will cool and soothe your skin after shaving. It will calm aggravated skin and natural antiseptics to help skin heal.

Avoiding in grown hairs

Ingrown hairs can be fairly common especially when you’re constantly shaving. The problem comes when they become infected or swollen. The whole area can become sore or bleed due to more shaving! In growing hairs occur when a strong hair curls back on itself and fails to reach the follicle opening. Sebum (or oil) builds up around the hair and causes a plug under the skin. If this plug becomes infected then the whole area can look sore. Sometimes the hair may grow out of the follicle but become trapped under a fine layer of skin. These hairs then run along under the surface of the skin and can be seen from the surface as black curls or lines.

As with anything, prevention is better than cure. Always shave with the direction of the hair growth and use an organic shaving gel lotion, cream or oil that gives really good lubrication. Organic pre shave oil such as Eselle organics aftershave oil will really help soften things up. Hairs that can be seen clearly growing along under the skin can be easily freed up with a sharp pair of sterilised tweezers. Don't actually pluck the hair out if you can help it until the next day as the follicle will then heal around it rather than over it, thereby not leaving you with the same problem next time. Use an organic facial scrub once a week to exfoliate dead skin cells and clear skin or excess debris that may plug pores, and free trapped hairs, keep the skin moisturised to keep it soft and supple and to encourage hairs to grow without any obstruction. The Eyre Biobotanics range is excellent for keeping the skin free from in grown hairs.

Organic Men’s Skin Care

Firstly let’s start at the beginning. You need to figure out your skin type………..

  • Normal Skin

If you have normal skin, it is likely to be problem free, look healthy and clear of spots and blemishes most of the time. It is important to regularly use a facial wash or cleanser, and non heavy moisturiser everyday too. Use a scrub twice a week and a face mask occasionally as a special skin treat. Any of the mens organic skin care lines will be great with your skin.

  • Sensitive Skin

You’ll know if you have sensitive skin because it reacts really easily to some products becoming red and blotchy. You may have broken or red veins, or turn red in the sun. It is important to avoid harsh chemicals or highly perfumed products. In any organic skin care line, you would be best choosing the fragrance free range such as Green People Organic skin care Base range, Essential care coconut cleanser, or Miessence soothing products. Avoid soaps and organic skin care products with essential oils that have not been chosen for sensitive skins. Protect your skin with a moisturiser whatever the weather. Trial a product by doing a patch test on your inner arm first. Also try Eselle organics skin care moisturiser for sensitive skin especially made for men.

  • Dry skin

You’re skin will often feel uncomfortable and taut, especially after having washed or shaved. Flakiness or peeling can often occur as can a greyish dull, dry and rough appearance. You may also experience some of the characteristics of sensitive skin, this maybe due to the excessive dryness. It is important you use a gentle facial wash such as Essential Cares organic skin care coconut cleanser, (their lemon and Tea Tree Cleanser will be too harsh for you), Miessence Rejuvenating products, or the Green people Organic skin care Base range.

Use a scrub gently once a week, this will encourage new cell growth and get rid of dead skin cells. Use a moisturiser twice a day, morning and night before sleeping. If your skin still feels dry and tight 15mins after having used it then it is not moisturising enough for you. Avoid using foams, gels or soaps and shaving products that will dry your skin further. Organic men’s skin care products tend to be oil or moisture based, and are without harsh chemicals so you will find them gentler than other ranges. It is more than likely that your skin maybe suffering from dehydration, this can especially be the case with air conditioning, travelling and stress. Make sure you drink about 8 glasses of water a day. That means water not beer or wine! Top up on Flax seed oils or fish oils to replace lost essential fatty acids in the skin.

  • Oily Skin

Depending on what type of skin you have it will help you check the description on organic skincare products to choose the one that’s right for you. You may be a couple of different ones, If it says all skin types, you’re generally safe whatever your skin type. It’s not so hard to keep your skin looking great. Although it may seem confusing with all the products on offer, we’ve devised you a Great Organic 5 Point Plan to Great looking, healthy skin to make it easier for you everyday.

  • Acne

Acne is the term for plugged skin pores (blackheads and white heads), pimples, and even deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even the upper arms. Acne affects teenagers and sometimes adults in their 20s, even those into their 40s can get acne. The acne condition can be upsetting and disfiguring. Many of the remedies on the market contain array of very strong chemicals and ingredients. Essential Care organic skin care has come up with a natural remedy. Essential Cares Lemon and Tea Tree Facial Wash when used in conjunction with Essential Care’s First aid lotion have shown excellent results in the treatment of Acne as Recommended by Proof! (October 2004 issue - Natural Remedies for Acne). Use a gentle organic facial scrub once a week and s clay mask once a week. Drink plenty of water and read up below on improving your diet. Do not pick your skin or aggravate pimples in any way. Use Essential care products regularly everyday.

Squeezing white heads is not a good idea as this releases bacteria onto the skin and can spread the problem wider. If you really must, then always steam your face first over some warm water to soften the blockages and then use a tissue to gently ease them out. Don't use excess pressure and make sure your hands are really clean. Use some Essential Care first aid Lotion on the area afterwards to reduce bacteria and help the healing process.
You may want to try some herbal supplements for example by Green people that are designed to rebalance the system and help to control acne internally. It's also worth taking Zinc and Vitamin C. Some people find it helpful to avoid dairy products and/or wheat. Generally try to watch your diet and eat plenty of vitamin-rich foods, drink plenty of water and avoid too much alcohol and stimulants such as tea and coffee.

With careful management and a good organic skin care routine mild acne can be successfully managed but if you are really suffering make sure you see your doctor.

  • Blackheads

Blackheads are alternatively known as comedones. They are particularly prevalent in Oily skin and are a plug of sebum or oil that gets trapped in a skin pore which becomes hard when it oxidises making it black. Infected blackheads can become white heads. Most commonly found in oilier areas such as the sides of the nose, chin or forehead. A built up enlarged blackhead can enlarge the pore permanently thus making it more prone to blackheads. So regular removal is essential for good organic skin care.

If a blackhead is large and un-infected you can 'extract' it yourself. Firstly soften the skin by having a hot shower or by steaming your face over a bowl of hot water. Even a very warm flannel placed over the area will soften the blockages making them easier to lift out. You can then either use a tissue with clean fingers to gently squeeze out the blockage or use an extractor. To use a tissue take two tissues and wrap one around each index finger so that they form pads at the finger tips. After softening the skin, place a padded fingertip each side of the blackhead and gently push until it pops out. If it doesn't come out easily leave it as too much squeezing will damage the skin making it look worse than before. An extractor is a tool with a scoop-shaped end with a central hole. After first softening the skin you press the hole over the blackhead and press gently. The plug should come out through the hole without damaging the surrounding skin. The side of the scoop can also be used to remove oily skin debris at the side of the nostrils, the dip of the chin and in the ears. You need to be careful when using the extractor not to cause any damage or scarring. If the blackhead doesn’t come out you may need to leave it and try again in a couple of days.

After removing the blackhead and to kill any bacteria that may enter the open pore apply an antiseptic cream such as Essential Cares first Aid Lotion. To keep blackheads at bay make sure you a suitable facial wash every day. Twice a week use a facial scrub to help shift pore-clogging debris and dead cells. If the skin is very greasy try using a clay mask once a week to absorb excess oil and impurities

1. Start with an Organic Facial Cleanser

The first step in organic men’s skin care is a good facial cleanser. Keeping your skin clean is really important if you want to avoid spots, blackheads and oily shine. Most Organic Facial Cleansers are non foaming facial washes/lotions. Lather is a red herring, it doesn’t really clean your skin, and it just dries it out. Organic cleansers don’t add them because they’re not needed.

Use a mens organic skin care facial cleanser twice a day. Once in the morning when you get up and once at night before you sleep. This will get rid of all the days’ pollution, dirt and grime and should really clean your skin it takes a minute and can be done in the shower or when you brush your teeth. Squeeze a two pence coin size blob into your palm and massage all over your face really concentrating on the sides of your nose, in the dip of your chin etc for about 60 seconds. With organic men’s skin care products such as cleanser, I would suggest that you don’t just rinse off with warm water. Although you can do this, you will get better results if you ring through a clean flannel with warm water until it’s just damp and wipe all the cleanser off. It’ll leave you with a really squeaky clean feeling. Finish with a splash of cooler water or toner to help close the pores.

We love organic men’s skin care from Eyre Biobotanics. They’re Facial Cleanser is totally jam packed with wild crafted Biobotanics, this special formula contains active enzymes which gently remove dead skin and dissolve excess sebum which then allows your skin free to breathe, this formula is great whatever your skin type. We also love Essential Cares selection of organic men’s skin care skin cleansers which are totally Soil Association Certified. There are two different types depending on your skin type. For people with problem, or oily skin, the Lemon and Tea Tree facial wash will leave you feeling zingy and fresh. It has antiseptic properties which make it great for people with acne prone skin. Can be used in conjunction with their first aid lotion to properly manage acne. Essential cares organic skin care Coconut cleanser is a milder formulation which is great for dry, normal or sensitive skin but is equally as effective. Green Peoples organic skin care Pre shave Face Wash does lather up, and is still good for you because it uses a very gentle natural foaming system. Great aroma, and packed with beneficial essential oils cypress, lavender and thyme, which softens your beard before shaving, and Citrus, Ylang Ylang and Geranium which prevent spots and blemishes from forming. The skin is left soft, supple and firm with Sweet almond, olive oil, Aloe Vera and glycerine.

2. Use a Skin toner after cleansing

The job of an organic skin care toner is to remove excess oils that clog pores, reduce shine, tone and clarify the skin helping to close open pores and stop them from getting clogged up from outside nasties. Great to use after cleansing your face splashed on and wiped off with cotton wool. We find Citrus toner goes down a treat with most men.

3. A Good Organic Moisturiser everyday and every night

A good mens organic skin care moisturiser will replace lost oils from your skin and help dehydrate your skin protecting it from weather, heating, air conditioning and pollution. It will keep it supple, smooth and remove that grey flaky look and tight uncomfortable feeling if you have dry skin. It will delay the onset on wrinkles, which are worse in un-moisturised dry skin, and it will keep your skin healthy. Unlike non organic skin care moisturisers which will just put a layer of chemicals on your skin 60% of which will be absorbed through the day!

For best effect, you will need to use your mens organic skin care moisturiser twice a day, morning after shaving and night before sleeping. Go for a light cream if your skin is greasy and a heavier one if your skin is dry. Most of our men’s organic skin care creams suit most skin types, though Miessence Purifying is great for greasy oily skin. We can’t choose between the others as they’re all so good. Green people’s mens organic skin care Cool moisturiser doubles up as an aftershave balm too.

4. Use an Organic Facial Scrub 1-2 times a week

The second step in a good organic men’s skin care routine is using a facial scrub product once or twice a week. The scrub does what it says, it often contains small natural organic grains in a beneficial gel or lotion that when rubbed all over you face and neck will gently remove dead skin cells making new for fresh healthy ones growing underneath. They also remove blocked grime and dirt in pores. It’ll brighten your skin complexion whilst most importantly also preventing in growing hairs and shaving bumps.

For best results use your mens organic skin care facial scrub once or twice a week in place of your skin cleanser. Anymore than that and you could risk drying your skin out or irritating it instead of helping it.

We love Eyre Biobotanics men’s organic skin care Triple Action facial Scrub contains refining granules which whisk away dead skin cells and the nutritive formula of bisabol prevents further blackheads and minimizes the appearances of open pores, triglycerides minimise oiliness, palmitoleic acid encourages cell growth, and xanthophyll protects against irritation and free radical damage.

5. Use a Face Mask once a week.

The job of the mens organic skin care face mask is two fold. It firstly opens the skin pores, draws out all the nasties that have been clogged up for days and weeks and hence deep cleans your skin. The active ingredients in an organic men’s skincare mask will also feed your skin with active botanicals and vitamins and minerals. Again, you can’t beat Eyre bio botanicals mens organic skin care deep cleansing mud mask. Your skin will look suppler, tighter and firmer and completely refreshed. As it’s a detoxifying process, you may find your skin getting a little worse before it gets better, but that’s because all the rubbish is being cleared out. Once it’s gone, it’s gone if you keep it up once a week.

The Good Organic Skin Diet Plan

Great skin care starts with the food you eat on a daily basis, eat junk and your skin will soon reflect what you’re putting in your mouth. Organic foods have been less processed; they contain more of their vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants and have not been treated with pesticides, chemicals or herbicides which contaminate the food before it even reaches your plate. Eat healthy nutrient rich foods which are high in antioxidants which fight free radical damage and reduce cell damage and you will be well on the way. Free radical damage is thought to cause premature aging. To avoid this eat plenty of bright coloured fruit and vegetables. A minimum of 5 servings of fruit and/or vegetables a day is recommended. Fruits like apricots, strawberries, plums and raspberries are excellent sources of anti-oxidants, as are vegetables such as carrots, squash, spinach, broccoli and any leafy greens

Water is vital for the cellular metabolism and it is very easy to become de hydrated. You may not feel it, but your skin will show it very quickly. Drink about 3 litres a day whenever possible and you will notice a big difference in the clarity and ‘bloom’ of your skin. Avoid fizzy drinks and high sugar drinks as you will be filling your body with empty calories.

Protein is vital to making your hair strong and shiny and your skin elastic and toned. About a 100gms of high-quality, low fat protein such as Chicken, fish and shellfish are sensible choices, avoid red meat as it can be inflammatory for the system.

Although important for the body, the wrong Carbohydrates can cause a sugar rush which then triggers the production of insulin to control it. This in turn can cause inflammation and cell damage in the body. You may have heard of eating foods with a low Glyceamic index as being best for you. This is because foods with a high glyceamic index are absorbed more slowly by the body thereby avoiding a huge blood sugar rush. Avoid where possible bread, corn, peas, white rice, pasta, bananas, grapes, potatoes and all refined pastries and sweets. Try to eat as many green vegetables, beans and fruits as possible. Fresh fruit is better than fruit juice as it has less sugar and more fibre and is more slowly broken down in the body. Research shows that sugar causes cross-linking in the collagen fibres of the skin. This causes them to lose their strength and elasticity and in turn encourages the appearance of brown discolouration marks and age spots. Avoid adding sugar to drinks and cooking and try not to eat anything that is very sweet or has a lot of pre-added sugar. You may need to be extra careful as sugar is hidden in many processed foods, sauces and of course alcohol.

Change your fat intake. Saturated fats from meat and dairy are quite bad for you. However mono-saturated fats found in olive oils, plant oils and fish are good for you. Certain types of fats found in oily fish and cereal oils that are known as Essential fatty Acids. The most important of these are Omega 3 and Omega 6. The two need to be in balance to maximise their benefits in the body. Omega 3 comes from oily fish and shell fish and has the ability to dramatically reduce compounds that cause inflammation in the cells. Omega 6 is found in high amounts in animal fats and lower amounts in oils such as sunflower, safflower and soybean oil. Chose the latter option as these won't overpower the omega 3. They are readily available in organic forms from health food stores. Eating the right balance of Essential Fatty Acids is not only good for your skin but can also help prevent other diseases such as heart disease. Cut out meat and dairy wherever possible.

Changing your diet is be the cheapest and most natural and most long lasting way to improve your skin and it will have huge benefits for your general health as well. Sticking to good skin care will only have limited effects on your skin. If the canvas can be improved from inside out then the rest is easy. Once you start to eat well the results will soon be visible and your skin should stay fresh, healthy and younger-looking for considerably longer.

The Organic Detox

There will be times when your skin requires really good detox and pick me up, maybe excessive partying or late nights. Here’s our quick and simple plan to get you back on track. Use only organic skin care for health reasons.

  1. Drastically cut down or give up alcohol for the time you are detoxing, be it a week or a month, just stick to it.
  2. Re-hydrate your skin by drinking about 3 litres of water a day. This will improve kidney function, and the whole detox process.
  3. Eat 5 fruit and veg a day, cut down on saturated fats and increase mono-saturated fats. The best way to do this is to take some fruit with you to work or have a smoothy for breakfast. Cut down on meat and dairy, eat lots of salads maybe with fish or chicken and get your self an organic omega supplement from the health food store.
  4. Go to bed early and get some beauty sleep
  5. Start some exercise. Even 20mins a day, a brisk walk at lunchtime or a jog after work maybe.
  6. If you Smoke then don’t…. give it up, cut it out, and throw it out!!!!!!!!!!!
  7. Give yourself a mini facial detox.

The Organic Weekly Detox plan for your skin

  1. After shaving with an organic shaving system whilst the skin is still damp apply a little organic facial wash to suit your skin type. Massage it over the skin firmly. This will increase the circulation and bring oxygen, blood and nutrients to the skin cells.
  2. Rinse it off thoroughly with running water.
  3. Apply some organic facial scrub mixed with a little water, and massage over the entire face but don't rub too hard. Rinse off with running water.
  4. At this point you can steam the skin over a basin of hot water to open the pores. Throw a towel over your head whilst your leaning over the basin and it will concentrate the effect. Then with either a tissue or a blackhead extractor, gently remove any blackheads or blocked pores. Avoid being too rough with your skin or you will mark or scar it. Only remove blockages that come out easily. Leave them if they’re not ready to come out.
  5. Blot the skin dry and apply an organic face mask over the face and neck avoiding the eyes and lips. Put some organic toner onto damp cotton wool and place over the eye lids to reduce puffiness and drain toxins from under the eyes. Leave for 10 minutes and rinse the face mask off with running water.
  6. Blot the skin dry and apply a little organic moisturiser. Massage this well into the skin using firm movements to increase the circulation.
  7. Use an eye cream or gel around the eye area to protect the skin here
